This article deals with work intensification in manufacturing industry. It shows its extent over the last twenty years and analyses its new forms linked to technological and organizational changes. It examines the relationship between work intensification and the evolution of employment and the role played by the age structure of the workforce. It studies the contribution of work intensification to the increase in labor productivity and explores the relationships being established between forms of work intensification and profitability.
