Flexicurity Projects: “Ideal” capitalism vs “reasonable” capitalism?

The debate about the opportunity to work towards the emergence of a system of “flexicurity” is in fact structured around the opposition between two major options. The first one attempts to implement an “ideal” capitalism, made of individuals become independent by the possession of sufficient allocations in different “capitals”. The second one refers instead to a vision that can be advantageously compared to that of J.R. Commons when he imagined the ways to implement a “reasonable” capitalism.

Securing of career paths, transitional labour markets and institutionalism

The securing of career paths, as conceived by the transitional labour markets approach, is not so much theorized, lacking a conceptual framework that could give it real theoretical substance. J. R. Commons’s institutionalist theory can overcome this problem. This paper presents a Commonsian theorization of the securing career paths inspired from a transactional analysis of the employment relationship.
